Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a regional forum where 21 member economies coordinate efforts to expand trade, investment, and economic cooperation. It operates through voluntary commitments and consensus rather than binding treaties.

APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting: The annual summit where APEC’s leaders set broad priorities for regional cooperation. Leaders provide political direction for the forum’s consensus-based work.
Bob Hawke: Australian prime minister from 1983 to 1991 who proposed a Pacific economic cooperation forum in 1989. Hawke’s 1989 proposal helped launch APEC.
Bogor Goals: APEC’s 1994 commitment to free and open trade and investment by 2010 for developed economies and 2020 for developing economies. The goals gave APEC’s trade-liberalization agenda a shared long-term target.
World Trade Organization: An international organization that administers trade agreements and provides a system for resolving trade disputes. WTO agreements are binding, unlike APEC’s voluntary commitments.
Shanghai Accord: A 2001 APEC agreement to accelerate trade liberalization and improve implementation of the Bogor Goals. The accord renewed pressure to turn APEC’s long-term goals into concrete progress.
APEC Ministerial Meeting: An annual gathering of APEC foreign and trade ministers to review cooperation and set priorities. Ministers translate leaders’ priorities into coordinated regional work.
Canberra: Australia’s capital city and the site of APEC’s first ministerial meeting in 1989. The inaugural meeting in Canberra established the forum.
APEC Business Travel Card: A travel document that facilitates short-term business travel among participating APEC economies. It turns regional cooperation into a practical benefit for business travelers.
Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership: A binding free trade agreement among economies in the Asia-Pacific and the Americas. The CPTPP imposes treaty obligations where APEC relies on consensus and voluntary action.
APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040: APEC’s 2020 vision for an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community by 2040. It sets a successor framework after the Bogor Goals’ target years.
