Asparuh of Bulgaria

Asparuh was a Bulgar ruler traditionally credited with founding the First Bulgarian Empire after leading his people across the Danube in the late seventh century.

Old Great Bulgaria: A seventh-century polity of Bulgar tribes north of the Black Sea, associated with Kubrat. Its fragmentation after Kubrat’s death preceded Asparuh’s westward migration.
Byzantine Empire: The medieval Roman state centered on Constantinople, which continued the eastern Roman imperial tradition. Asparuh’s state emerged through conflict with Byzantium and its recognition of Bulgarian power.
