Assemblage

Assemblage is an artmaking method that joins found or fabricated objects into a composition. It makes the objects’ existing forms and associations part of the work.

Readymade: An artwork made by designating an ordinary manufactured object as art. Like assemblage, it makes an object's prior identity and context part of its artistic force.
Cubism: An early twentieth-century art movement that fractured forms into geometric viewpoints. Cubist experiments with pasted materials helped establish the logic of composing with fragments.
Jean Dubuffet: A French artist who developed Art Brut and made paintings and sculptures from unconventional materials. His material experiments connected assemblage with a challenge to academic artistic standards.
Bottle Rack: Marcel Duchamp’s 1914 readymade consisting of a metal bottle-drying rack. It marks a boundary case where selection alone approaches assemblage's use of objects.
Sculpture: Three-dimensional art made by shaping, joining, or arranging materials. Assemblage is one route to sculpture, distinguished by its use of combined objects.
Collage: An art technique that composes images or materials by attaching them to a surface. Collage typically builds on a flat support, while assemblage joins objects into a three-dimensional composition.
Pablo Picasso: A Spanish artist whose work helped shape Cubism and modern art. His constructed sculptures brought everyday materials into sculptural composition.
Robert Rauschenberg: An American artist known for combining painting, sculpture, and everyday objects. His Combines blurred the boundary between assemblage and painting.
Guitar (Picasso, 1912): Pablo Picasso’s constructed cardboard sculpture representing a guitar. Its cut and joined planes demonstrate how construction can create a sculptural object without carving.
Installation art: Art arranged in a space to shape how that space is experienced. Assemblage can expand from a single constructed object into an environment.
