Assembly line

An assembly line is a production system in which a product moves through sequential workstations, each performing a specific operation. It divides production into repeatable tasks to increase output and consistency.

Division of labor: The allocation of different tasks to different people or groups. Assembly lines split product-making into specialized tasks performed at successive stations.
Manufacturing: The large-scale transformation of materials into finished goods using labor, tools, and machinery. Assembly lines are one system within the broader practice of manufacturing.
Automotive industry: The industry that designs, manufactures, and sells motor vehicles and their components. Automobile plants became the iconic setting for large-scale assembly lines.
Craft production: The production of goods by skilled workers, often making complete items or small batches with flexible methods. It contrasts with the assembly line's division of work into specialized stations.
Workstation: A designated place or station where a worker or machine performs a task. Each station carries out one operation before the product moves onward.
Interchangeable parts: Components made to consistent specifications so that one can replace another of the same type. Standardized parts made it practical to assemble products through repeatable operations.
Electronics manufacturing: The production of electronic components and devices, from circuit boards to finished products. Electronics lines combine precise manual work, automated placement, and testing.
Batch production: A production method that makes groups of identical products before switching to another group. Unlike continuous line flow, batches move between operations as groups.
Takt time: The rate of production needed to match customer demand. It sets the target pace for completing units along the line.
Eli Whitney: An American inventor and manufacturer associated with promoting interchangeable parts in the early nineteenth century. His manufacturing work helped establish standardization that later supported line production.
