Assimilation

Assimilation is the process by which a group adopts the practices and identity of a more dominant society, often through sustained social pressure or policy.

Language shift: The process in which a community gradually stops using one language and adopts another. A dominant language can replace a group’s heritage language across generations.
Cultural pluralism: A social arrangement in which distinct cultural groups maintain their identities within a shared society. It contrasts with assimilation by treating cultural difference as compatible with belonging.
Forced assimilation: Assimilation imposed through coercive laws, institutions, or threats that suppress a group’s culture. It makes explicit the coercion that can accompany dominant-group pressure.
Cultural erasure: The loss or suppression of a group’s cultural practices, knowledge, language, or historical presence. Assimilation can erase traditions when dominant norms displace inherited ones.
Chicago School of Sociology: A sociological tradition centered at the University of Chicago that studied urban life and social change. Its early twentieth-century research developed influential accounts of immigrant assimilation.
Intermarriage: Marriage between people belonging to different ethnic, religious, or social groups. Family ties can increase cultural contact and reshape group boundaries.
Multiculturalism: An approach that recognizes or supports the coexistence of multiple cultural groups in a society. It offers a framework for inclusion without requiring cultural sameness.
Americanization: The historical effort to encourage immigrants in the United States to adopt American language, customs, and civic identity. It shows assimilation pursued as a national project for immigrant communities.
Heritage language: A language associated with a person’s family or community that differs from the dominant language around them. Its continued use can preserve ties that assimilation pressures often weaken.
Robert E. Park: An American sociologist whose work on race relations and urban life shaped early assimilation theory. His race-relations cycle described assimilation as one possible outcome of group contact.
