Aššur

Aššur was an ancient city on the west bank of the Tigris in northern Mesopotamia and the religious center from which Assyria took its name.

Early Dynastic Period: A period of competing city-states in southern Mesopotamia, conventionally dated to the third millennium BCE. Aššur’s earliest urban development belongs to the wider world of early Mesopotamian city-states.
Aššur (god): The national god of Assyria, associated with the city of Aššur and its kingship. The city shared its name with the deity who embodied Assyrian rule.
