Asterids

Asterids are a major clade of flowering plants within the core eudicots. The group includes familiar plants such as sunflowers, tomatoes, mint, and coffee.

Angiosperms: Angiosperms are flowering plants that produce seeds enclosed within fruits. Asterids are one of the largest evolutionary branches within flowering plants.
Asterid floral morphology: Asterid floral morphology comprises recurring flower structures, including fused petals and stamens attached to the corolla. These recurring structures help characterize many, but not all, asterid flowers.
Asterales: Asterales is an order of flowering plants that includes daisies, sunflowers, and bellflowers. It contains some of the most recognizable asterid families and flower forms.
Rosids: Rosids are a major core-eudicot clade that includes roses, legumes, and many trees. Rosids are asterids’ sister group among the two largest core-eudicot branches.
Eudicots: Eudicots are a major angiosperm clade characterized by tricolpate pollen and related forms. Asterids belong to the core eudicots, a subgroup of this broader clade.
Inferior ovary: An inferior ovary is positioned below the attachment points of the other floral organs. Inferior ovaries occur in several asterid groups, including many campanulids.
Solanales: Solanales is an order of flowering plants that includes nightshades and morning glories. Its familiar crops and ornamentals illustrate the variety of asterid lineages.
Monocots: Monocots are flowering plants whose seeds typically have one embryonic cotyledon. They are a major angiosperm lineage outside the eudicots that contain asterids.
Core eudicots: Core eudicots are a large clade of eudicots containing rosids and asterids. This is the immediate larger clade that contains asterids.
Iridoid: Iridoids are a class of monoterpenoid compounds found in many plants and often involved in defense. Iridoids are widespread chemical markers in several asterid lineages.
