Astrometry

Astrometry measures the positions, distances, and motions of celestial objects. Its precise measurements reveal stellar parallaxes, proper motions, and orbital perturbations.

Stellar parallax: The apparent shift of a nearby star against distant background objects as Earth orbits the Sun. Its annual angular shift gives astrometry a direct geometric method for measuring stellar distance.
Gaia (spacecraft): The European Space Agency space observatory that mapped the positions, distances, and motions of more than a billion stars. Its repeated all-sky measurements produced an unprecedented astrometric catalog.
Hipparchus: An ancient Greek astronomer whose surviving star catalogue and work on precession shaped positional astronomy. His catalogue exemplifies the early effort to record stellar positions systematically.
Radial velocity method: A method for detecting orbiting planets by measuring periodic shifts in a star’s spectral lines. It measures motion along the line of sight, complementing astrometry’s measurements across the sky.
Proper motion: A star’s apparent angular change in position across the sky over time, excluding parallax and temporary effects. Repeated astrometric positions reveal this long-term motion across the celestial sphere.
Hipparcos: The European Space Agency satellite that made the first space-based high-precision astrometric survey. Its measurements established space astrometry as a source of precise stellar distances.
Tycho Brahe: A Danish astronomer whose exceptionally precise naked-eye observations supplied positions for planetary theory. His measurements showed how accurate positional data could transform astronomy.
Photometry: The measurement of the brightness or flux of astronomical sources. Photometry tracks changes in light intensity rather than precise sky position.
Celestial reference frame: A coordinate system anchored to celestial objects for specifying positions and motions in the sky. Astrometric measurements need a stable frame to compare positions across instruments and epochs.
Astrometric exoplanet detection: The detection of an exoplanet through the reflex motion it induces in its host star’s sky position. Astrometry can reveal a planet’s orbit and true mass from the star’s positional wobble.
