Astronomical instrumentation

Astronomical instrumentation comprises devices and systems that detect, collect, and measure signals from celestial objects. It includes telescopes, detectors, spectrographs, and instruments for signals such as neutrinos and gravitational waves.

Telescope: An instrument that collects and focuses electromagnetic radiation to form images or enable measurements. Telescopes gather incoming light and direct it into instruments for analysis.
Radio telescope: A telescope designed to detect radio-frequency radiation from astronomical sources. Radio telescopes expose sources invisible to optical instruments, including cold gas and pulsars.
Optics: The study and engineering of light, including its propagation, reflection, refraction, and interaction with matter. Optical principles govern how astronomical instruments collect and focus visible and infrared light.
Galileo Galilei: An Italian astronomer and physicist who made telescopic observations that transformed early modern astronomy. Galileo's telescope observations established instruments as tools for discovering celestial phenomena.
Interferometry: A measurement technique that combines waves from multiple paths to infer properties of their sources. Interferometers combine separated signals to achieve capabilities unavailable to a single aperture.
Charge-coupled device: A semiconductor image sensor that converts incoming photons into stored electrical charge. Charge-coupled devices turn focused astronomical light into digital images.
X-ray telescope: A telescope that collects and focuses high-energy X-ray radiation from celestial sources. X-ray observatories measure extreme environments such as accretion disks and hot galaxy clusters.
Photon: A quantum of electromagnetic radiation that carries energy and momentum. Photon counting sets fundamental limits on measurements of faint celestial sources.
William Herschel: A German-born British astronomer who discovered Uranus and investigated infrared radiation. Herschel's measurements extended astronomical instrumentation beyond visible light.
Aperture synthesis: A method for reconstructing an image by combining measurements from multiple telescope baselines. Aperture synthesis uses arrays to simulate a much larger collecting aperture.
