Astronomical observation

Astronomical observation is the systematic measurement of celestial objects and events to infer their properties, motions, origins, and effects on Earth.

Electromagnetic spectrum: The full range of electromagnetic radiation, ordered by frequency or wavelength. Astronomers select wavelengths across this spectrum to detect different celestial signals.
Electromagnetic radiation: Energy that propagates through space as coupled electric and magnetic fields. Most astronomical measurements begin with radiation traveling from a source to a detector.
Exoplanet transit: The passage of a planet across the face of its star as seen by an observer. A transit produces a measurable dip in starlight that can reveal a planet.
Theoretical astronomy: The use of mathematical models and physical laws to explain astronomical systems and predict their behavior. It builds explanations and predictions that observations can test.
Heliocentrism: The model that places the Sun near the center of the planetary system, with Earth orbiting it. Planetary observations helped displace Earth-centered models.
Telescope: An instrument that collects and focuses radiation to form images or measurements of distant objects. Telescopes gather faint celestial signals and distinguish nearby sources.
Apparent magnitude: A logarithmic scale expressing how bright a celestial object appears from Earth. It provides a standardized way to compare observed celestial brightness.
Radial velocity method: A technique for detecting motion along the line of sight through shifts in a star's spectral lines. It detects a planet’s gravitational tug on its host star.
Numerical simulation: The computational representation of a physical system through numerical solutions of its governing equations. Simulations explore possible outcomes where direct measurement is incomplete or impossible.
Kepler's laws of planetary motion: Three mathematical relations describing how planets orbit the Sun. Tycho Brahe’s precise positional observations enabled Kepler to derive these laws.
