Astronomical radio source

An object or region in space that emits detectable radio waves. Radio emission can arise from thermal radiation, charged-particle motion, or coherent processes.

Synchrotron radiation: Radiation emitted when relativistic charged particles accelerate in magnetic fields. It produces radio emission in many supernova remnants, jets, and galaxies.
Pulsar: A rotating neutron star whose beams of radiation produce regular pulses as they sweep across Earth. Its periodic radio pulses make it one of astronomy's most precisely timed sources.
Radio astronomy: The study of celestial objects and phenomena through radio waves. It is the observational field built around detecting and interpreting these sources.
Optical astronomy: The study of celestial objects using visible light. Optical observations often show stars and dust obscured or inconspicuous in radio maps.
Thermal bremsstrahlung: Radiation produced when charged particles are deflected by other charged particles in a hot plasma. Ionized gas clouds and hot plasma emit radio waves through this process.
Quasar: An extremely luminous active galactic nucleus powered by matter accreting onto a supermassive black hole. Some quasars are powerful radio emitters with large jets extending beyond their host galaxies.
Very-long-baseline interferometry: A radio observing technique that combines telescopes separated by large distances to achieve high angular resolution. It resolves compact radio sources, including jets near black holes.
Infrared astronomy: The study of celestial objects through infrared radiation. Infrared and radio observations trace different temperatures and physical components of cosmic matter.
Coherent radio emission: Radio emission in which waves from many particles combine with aligned phases, greatly amplifying the signal. Pulsars and some other compact objects generate intense radio signals through coherent processes.
Supernova remnant: Expanding debris and shocked gas left after a star explodes as a supernova. Its magnetized, energetic particles produce extended synchrotron radio emission.
