Asuka period

The Asuka period is a phase of Japanese history conventionally dated from 592 to 710. It is marked by the spread of Buddhism and the formation of a centralized state.

Taika Reform: A set of reforms initiated in 645 that expanded imperial authority and reorganized land, taxation, and administration. It advanced the centralizing project associated with the Asuka court.
Kofun period: A period of Japanese history, roughly the third through sixth centuries, named for its large burial mounds. It immediately preceded Asuka and supplied its emerging court with political institutions.
Empress Suiko: Japan’s first historically attested reigning empress, who ruled from 592 to 628. Her reign marks the conventional opening date of the Asuka period.
Kofun: A large earthen burial mound built for an elite person in ancient Japan, often furnished with grave goods. Kofun burial traditions reveal the elite culture inherited by Asuka society.
Nara period: A period of Japanese history from 710 to 794, when the capital was established at Heijō-kyō. It followed Asuka and inherited the centralized institutions developed during the seventh century.
Ritsuryō: A system of government based on administrative codes and penal law, developed in Japan from the seventh century onward. It shows how Asuka-era centralization matured into a durable legal-administrative order.
Yamato period: A name for the era when the Yamato court established political dominance across much of the Japanese archipelago. Its evolving court and territory formed the setting for Asuka’s state-building.
Soga no Umako: A powerful Soga clan leader who promoted Buddhism and shaped Japanese court politics in the late sixth century. His political victories helped secure Buddhist patronage at court.
Uji-kabane system: A system that organized ancient Japanese clans and ranked their leaders through hereditary titles. Its clan-based order was a political structure the centralizing court sought to reshape.
Hōryū-ji: A Buddhist temple complex in Nara Prefecture, traditionally founded by Prince Shōtoku and containing some of Japan’s oldest surviving wooden buildings. Its early structures preserve material evidence of Asuka-era Buddhism and architecture.
