Aswan High Dam

The Aswan High Dam is a rock-fill dam across the Nile in southern Egypt, completed in 1970. It controls floods, stores water in Lake Nasser, and generates hydroelectric power.

Lake Nasser: A vast reservoir formed behind the Aswan High Dam, extending south into Sudan. The dam’s storage capacity comes from impounding the Nile in this reservoir.
Egyptian agriculture: The cultivation of crops in Egypt, concentrated along the Nile and its delta. Stored water enabled more predictable irrigation and expanded year-round cultivation.
Gamal Abdel Nasser: Egyptian military officer and president from 1956 to 1970, associated with Arab nationalism and state-led development. Nasser made the dam a centerpiece of Egypt’s modernization and national sovereignty.

Egyptian Revolution of 1952: The military overthrow of Egypt’s monarchy in 1952, which established a republic. The new regime pursued the dam as a symbol and instrument of national development.
Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam: A large hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, officially inaugurated in 2025. It creates a new upstream reservoir and shifts regional debates over Nile water management.
Hydroelectricity: Electricity generated by converting the energy of moving or falling water. Water released through the dam’s turbines powers its generating station.
Nile perch: A large predatory freshwater fish native to African river and lake systems. The new reservoir created habitat that supported a major Nile perch fishery.
