Atatürk's reforms

A program of political, legal, social, and cultural changes that transformed the Republic of Turkey under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, replacing Ottoman institutions with a secular nation-state.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: The Turkish military officer and statesman who founded the Republic of Turkey and served as its first president. As president and Republican People's Party leader, he directed and symbolized the reform program.
Abolition of the Ottoman sultanate: The Turkish Grand National Assembly's 1922 decision ending the Ottoman sultan's political authority. It removed the monarchy before the republic was proclaimed.
Women's suffrage in Turkey: The extension of voting rights to Turkish women in municipal elections in 1930 and national elections in 1934. It made women's political participation a formal part of the new civic order.
Secularism in Turkey: The political principle and contested practice of separating religious authority from state institutions in Turkey. The reforms established state secularism while keeping religious institutions under government oversight.
