Athena Parthenos

A colossal gold-and-ivory statue of Athena made by Phidias for the Parthenon and dedicated in 438 BCE. Its original is lost, but ancient descriptions and later copies preserve its design.

Phidias: An Athenian sculptor of the fifth century BCE, renowned for monumental images of Athena and Zeus. He designed and supervised the statue’s creation.
Varvakeion Athena: A Roman-period marble statuette that is the most complete surviving copy of the Athena Parthenos. Its pose and attributes provide the clearest surviving visual guide to the lost original.
