The naval forces maintained by Athens, especially the fleet of triremes that powered its military and imperial reach in the fifth century BCE.

Trireme: An ancient warship propelled mainly by three banks of oars on each side. Athens’s fleet relied on triremes for speed, maneuverability, and ramming attacks.
Themistocles' naval program: The Athenian policy of using Laurion silver revenue to build a large fleet around 483 BCE. It created the ships that made Athens a leading naval power.
