Atlantic Canada

Atlantic Canada is the eastern Canadian region comprising New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Its Atlantic coast and maritime history connect the four provinces.

New Brunswick: A Canadian province bordered by Quebec, Nova Scotia, the United States, and the Bay of Fundy. It is the region’s only officially bilingual province and shares its mainland boundary with the rest of Canada.
Mi’kmaq: An Indigenous people whose traditional territory includes much of Atlantic Canada and parts of Quebec and Maine. Mi’kmaq communities have longstanding ties to lands now within several Atlantic provinces.
Atlantic Canada fishery: The commercial harvesting and processing of marine species along Canada’s Atlantic coast. Fishing has sustained coastal communities and remains a major regional industry.
Atlantic Canadian diaspora: People of Atlantic Canadian origin who live elsewhere in Canada or abroad. Longstanding outmigration has spread regional communities and cultural ties across the country.
Newfoundland and Labrador: A Canadian province consisting of Newfoundland island and the mainland region of Labrador. Its island and mainland geography sets it apart from the other Atlantic provinces.
Wolastoqiyik: An Indigenous people whose traditional territory follows the Wolastoq, or Saint John River, and surrounding lands. Their homeland spans present-day New Brunswick and reaches into neighbouring regions.
Atlantic Canadian shipbuilding: The construction and repair of vessels in Atlantic Canada’s ports and industrial centres. Harbour access and naval demand have made shipbuilding a longstanding regional activity.
Acadian diaspora: The dispersal of Acadian people after British deportations beginning in 1755. The deportations reshaped Acadian settlement in Atlantic Canada and beyond.
Nova Scotia: A Canadian province made up of a peninsula and Cape Breton Island. Its long Atlantic coastline and Halifax make it a major regional population and port centre.
Beothuk: An Indigenous people of Newfoundland who became extinct as a distinct people in the nineteenth century. Their history shows the devastating effects of colonization on Newfoundland’s Indigenous population.
