Atlantic Forest

The Atlantic Forest is a tropical and subtropical forest region along Brazil’s Atlantic coast, extending into parts of Paraguay and Argentina. It contains exceptionally high biodiversity and many species found nowhere else.

Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests: A biome of warm, humid forests dominated by broadleaf trees and substantial rainfall. The Atlantic Forest belongs to this broad forest biome.
Atlantic Forest deforestation: The clearing and degradation of native forest across Brazil’s Atlantic Forest region. Agriculture, urban growth, and resource extraction have reduced the forest to scattered remnants.
Brazilian Forest Code: Brazilian legislation regulating native vegetation protection on private rural properties. Its rules govern legal reserves and protected riparian areas within the forest region.

Habitat fragmentation: The division of continuous habitat into smaller, isolated patches. Fragmentation isolates Atlantic Forest populations and changes ecological processes.
Conservation unit (Brazil): A legally designated Brazilian protected area governed by the National System of Conservation Units. Conservation units safeguard key Atlantic Forest habitats and species.
Iguaçu National Park: A national park in southern Brazil protecting subtropical forest and the Iguaçu Falls. It conserves a major southwestern remnant of the Atlantic Forest.
Landscape connectivity: The degree to which a landscape enables movement among habitat patches. Conservation planning must identify which connections most benefit Atlantic Forest species.
