Atlanticism

Atlanticism is a political orientation favoring close cooperation between North America and Europe, especially through NATO and the broader transatlantic partnership.

Atlantic Charter: A 1941 joint declaration by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill outlining principles for the postwar order. Its shared principles foreshadowed the political partnership Atlanticism later championed.
NATO: A political and military alliance of North American and European countries founded in 1949. NATO is the principal institution through which Atlanticist security cooperation is organized.
European strategic autonomy: The aim of giving Europe greater capacity to act independently in security and foreign policy. It raises the question of how much European independence can coexist with Atlanticist reliance on NATO.
NATO enlargement: The expansion of NATO membership to include additional countries, especially after the Cold War. Expansion extended Atlanticist security guarantees across Central and Eastern Europe.
Russia–Ukraine war: The war between Russia and Ukraine that escalated with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The war has renewed NATO’s centrality while testing allied unity and long-term commitments.
North Atlantic Treaty: The 1949 treaty that established a collective-defense alliance among North American and European states. It gave Atlanticism its defining security commitment.
NATO Article 5: The North Atlantic Treaty clause stating that an armed attack on one ally is considered an attack on all. Collective defense makes the alliance’s central Atlanticist promise concrete.
Gaullism: A French political tradition associated with national sovereignty, executive authority, and independent foreign policy. Charles de Gaulle’s pursuit of strategic independence challenged US-led Atlantic coordination.
Transatlantic burden-sharing: The distribution of defense costs and military responsibilities among the United States, Canada, and European allies. Disputes over unequal contributions repeatedly test Atlanticist solidarity.
Donald Trump and NATO: The relationship between Donald Trump’s political positions and the United States’ commitments to NATO. Doubts about US guarantees raise questions about the reliability of Atlanticist security ties.
