Atmospheric convection

Atmospheric convection is vertical heat transport driven by rising warm, less dense air and sinking cool, denser air. It redistributes energy, moisture, and momentum through the atmosphere.

Buoyancy: The upward force on an object or fluid parcel caused by surrounding fluid of different density. Warm air rises when its density is lower than that of the surrounding air.
Thunderstorm: A storm produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, usually with lightning and thunder. Strong convective updrafts build cumulonimbus clouds and drive thunderstorm development.
Atmospheric stability: The tendency of the atmosphere to resist or amplify vertical displacement of air parcels. Stability determines whether convection is suppressed, shallow, or vigorous.
Atmospheric conduction: Heat transfer through molecular collisions without bulk movement of the air. Conduction transfers heat locally, whereas convection transports it through moving air.
Adiabatic process: A thermodynamic change that occurs without heat entering or leaving a system. Rising parcels expand and cool, while descending parcels compress and warm.
Cumulonimbus cloud: A towering convective cloud associated with heavy precipitation, lightning, and sometimes hail or severe winds. Its vertical extent records deep atmospheric convection.
Potential temperature: The temperature an air parcel would have if moved adiabatically to a standard reference pressure. Its vertical distribution helps diagnose atmospheric stability and mixing.
Atmospheric radiation: The emission, absorption, and transfer of energy by electromagnetic radiation in the atmosphere. Radiation carries energy without requiring the air's bulk vertical motion.
Environmental lapse rate: The rate at which atmospheric temperature changes with altitude at a particular time and place. It determines whether displaced air parcels remain buoyant or return to their starting level.
Sea breeze: A daytime wind that blows from a cooler body of water toward warmer land. Unequal surface heating drives a shallow coastal circulation with rising air over land.
