Weather front

A weather front is a boundary between air masses with different temperature, humidity, or density. Its passage often changes wind, clouds, precipitation, and temperature.

Cyclogenesis: The development or strengthening of a cyclone, often along a boundary between contrasting air masses. Temperature contrasts across fronts can supply energy for developing midlatitude cyclones.
Air mass: A large body of air with relatively uniform temperature and moisture characteristics. A front is the boundary between air masses with contrasting properties.
Weather forecasting: The use of observations and models to predict future atmospheric conditions. Forecasters track fronts to anticipate shifts in wind, temperature, and precipitation.
Cold front: A boundary where advancing cold air displaces warmer air. Its relatively steep lifting often produces a narrow band of showers or storms.
Bergen School of Meteorology: A group of Norwegian meteorologists who developed influential ideas and methods in modern weather forecasting. Its members established the frontal analysis framework used to interpret midlatitude weather systems.
Frontogenesis: The process by which horizontal gradients in air temperature or density sharpen into a front. It describes how a diffuse air-mass boundary becomes a distinct front.
Air density: The mass of air contained in a given volume, influenced chiefly by temperature, pressure, and moisture. Density differences help determine which air mass advances and which is displaced.
Surface weather analysis: The interpretation of surface observations to map pressure systems, fronts, and other weather features. Fronts are analyzed from station data and plotted on surface charts.
Warm front: A boundary where advancing warm air rises over retreating cooler air. Its gradual slope often supports widespread clouds and precipitation ahead of the surface boundary.
Vilhelm Bjerknes: A Norwegian physicist and meteorologist who helped establish modern mathematical meteorology and weather forecasting. His research laid groundwork for the Norwegian School’s analysis of fronts and cyclones.
