Atmospheric perspective

Atmospheric perspective is a visual technique that suggests distance by making faraway forms less distinct and often lighter, cooler, and bluer than nearby forms.

Rayleigh scattering: The scattering of light by particles much smaller than its wavelength, which preferentially scatters shorter wavelengths. Scattered blue light contributes to the cool cast often seen in distant landscapes.
Linear perspective: A system for representing three-dimensional space by making parallel lines converge toward vanishing points. It creates depth through geometry, complementing atmospheric perspective's changes in tone and color.
Mona Lisa: A portrait painting by Leonardo da Vinci, probably created between 1503 and 1519. Its hazy, blue-green background recedes through progressively softened forms.
Linear perspective (art): A method of depicting space in which parallel lines appear to converge with distance. Unlike atmospheric perspective, it signals distance chiefly through converging geometry.
Aerosol: A suspension of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in a gas. Aerosols scatter and absorb light between an observer and distant objects.
Value (art): The relative lightness or darkness of a color in an artwork. Distant forms are often painted with lighter values to suggest air between them and the viewer.
The Last Supper: A mural by Leonardo da Vinci depicting Jesus's final meal with his disciples. Leonardo uses a receding landscape beyond the room to extend spatial depth.
Chiaroscuro: The use of strong contrasts between light and dark to model volume in art. Chiaroscuro describes illumination and form, while atmospheric perspective cues distance through intervening air.
Optical depth: A measure of how strongly a medium absorbs or scatters light along a path. Greater optical depth means more intervening atmosphere alters the light from distant forms.
Color temperature: The perceived warmth or coolness of a color. A shift toward cooler colors is a common, though not universal, cue to distance.
