Atrazine

Atrazine is a synthetic triazine herbicide used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds, especially in corn and sorghum crops. It inhibits photosystem II, disrupting photosynthesis in susceptible plants.

Photosystem II: A protein complex in oxygen-producing photosynthesis that uses light energy to extract electrons from water. Atrazine binds its D1 protein and blocks electron transfer through this complex.
Corn production: The cultivation of maize for food, feed, fuel, and industrial uses. Atrazine is widely used to manage weeds in corn fields.
Atrazine in drinking water: The occurrence of atrazine residues in water supplies used for human consumption. Runoff and leaching can carry atrazine into surface water and groundwater sources.
