Widespread forced labor, violence, and killings carried out under King Leopold II’s rule of the Congo Free State, especially to extract rubber.

Congo Free State: A Central African territory ruled personally by King Leopold II of Belgium from 1885 to 1908. Leopold’s regime organized the territorial administration and concessions behind the abuses.
King Leopold II: King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909 who established and personally ruled the Congo Free State. His private sovereignty made the territory’s extraction project his responsibility.
E. D. Morel: A British journalist and reformer who campaigned against abuses in the Congo Free State. His analysis of trade records helped expose forced labor behind rubber exports.
