Auckland Region

A region in northern New Zealand’s North Island centered on Auckland, encompassing the city, surrounding rural areas, and offshore islands.

Auckland: New Zealand’s largest urban area, occupying much of the Auckland Region’s central isthmus and extending across nearby shores. The region’s urban core gives its name and concentrates most of its population.
Unitary authority: A local government body that combines regional and territorial council responsibilities. Auckland Council exercises both levels of local government across the region.
Auckland volcanic field: A field of more than 50 volcanic centres scattered across Auckland’s isthmus and surrounding areas. Its cones and craters are among the region’s defining landforms and public spaces.
Wellington Region: A region at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island, centered on the capital city, Wellington. It is another major North Island region, but with a smaller urban population and different geography.
Auckland Council: The local authority governing the Auckland Region, formed in 2010 by combining regional and territorial councils. It administers the region as one unitary authority.
Auckland Transport: A council-controlled organization responsible for Auckland’s local transport planning and public transport services. It coordinates transport across the region’s urban and rural communities.
Rangitoto Island: A volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf, formed by Auckland’s most recent major volcanic eruption. The island is a prominent landmark and conservation destination off the city.
Canterbury Region: A large region of New Zealand’s South Island centered on Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains. Its broad rural extent contrasts with Auckland’s concentrated urban footprint.
Hauraki Gulf: A gulf east of Auckland containing numerous islands and coastal waters. Its islands and waters form a distinctive part of the region’s eastern extent.
Auckland motorway network: A system of motorways connecting Auckland’s central area with suburbs and regional routes. The network links settlements spread across the region’s isthmus and outskirts.
