Audiobook

An audiobook is a book narrated aloud and distributed as an audio recording or digital audio file. It may be read by an actor, the author, or a synthetic voice.

Audiobook narration: The spoken performance of a book for release as an audiobook. Narration turns the written text into the audiobook’s audible performance.
Talking Books: Recorded spoken books produced to provide access to literature for people unable to read standard print. The early Talking Books program established a major model for recorded book access.
National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled: A Library of Congress program that provides braille and recorded materials to eligible people with print disabilities. Its free audiobook service supports access to books for people who cannot use standard print.
E-book: A book published in a digital format for reading on an electronic device. An e-book presents written text for visual reading rather than narrated listening.
Voice acting: The use of vocal performance to portray characters or convey emotion and meaning. Narrators use vocal characterization to distinguish dialogue and shape dramatic tone.
American Foundation for the Blind: A nonprofit organization founded in 1921 to improve opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired. The organization helped develop and distribute early recorded books in the United States.
Audible: An audiobook and spoken-word entertainment service owned by Amazon. Audible popularized subscription-based digital audiobook distribution.
Print book: A book whose content is printed on physical pages. Print books preserve the page-based form that audiobook editions translate into sound.
Digital audio: Sound represented as numerical data that can be stored, processed, and played electronically. Most current audiobooks are distributed as digital audio files or streams.
Library of Congress: The research library of the United States Congress and the nation's oldest federal cultural institution. Its National Library Service administered the U.S. Talking Books program.
