Auditory perception

Auditory perception is the interpretation of sound to identify sources, qualities, and events. It combines the analysis of acoustic patterns with expectations and attention.

Auditory pathway: The neural route that carries sound information from the cochlea through brainstem and thalamic relays to auditory cortex. Its successive stages transform signals before they support conscious sound perception.
Sound: A propagating mechanical disturbance in a medium that can produce the sensation of hearing. Auditory perception begins with pressure variations traveling through a medium.
Speech perception: The process of identifying linguistic sounds and words from spoken signals. Speech shows how perception extracts meaningful categories from variable sound.
Visual perception: The interpretation of light signals to identify objects, properties, and events. Vision relies on spatially distributed light rather than pressure waves and cochlear transduction.
Sound localization: The perceptual process of estimating a sound source’s direction and distance. Differences between the ears help assign perceived sounds to locations.
Frequency: The number of cycles of a repeating signal per unit time, measured in hertz. Frequency is a major acoustic cue to perceived pitch.
Music perception: The perception and interpretation of musical features such as pitch, rhythm, and harmony. Music engages pitch, timing, grouping, and learned expectations.
Tinnitus: The perception of sound without a corresponding external acoustic source. It is a sound experience that arises without ordinary external stimulation.
Auditory scene analysis: The process of organizing acoustic input into perceptual streams corresponding to sound sources. It explains how overlapping sounds become distinct streams and events.
Amplitude: The magnitude of a sound wave’s variation from its baseline pressure. Amplitude contributes to perceived loudness, though the relation is not linear.
