Augsburg Interim

The Augsburg Interim was a 1548 imperial decree that temporarily required Catholic practices in Protestant territories of the Holy Roman Empire after the Schmalkaldic War.

Schmalkaldic War: A 1546–1547 conflict in which Emperor Charles V defeated the Protestant Schmalkaldic League. Its defeat of the League gave Charles V leverage to impose a religious settlement.
Interim of Leipzig: A 1548 proposal by Protestant rulers that modified the Augsburg Interim while preserving core Protestant teachings. It offered a Protestant alternative to the emperor’s more Catholic settlement.
Maurice, Elector of Saxony: A Protestant prince who helped Charles V defeat the Schmalkaldic League and later turned against the emperor. Maurice initially supported the emperor’s policy but later helped force its abandonment.
Peace of Augsburg: A 1555 settlement that recognized Lutheranism alongside Catholicism in the Holy Roman Empire. It replaced the failed Interim with a negotiated legal framework for religious division.
Schmalkaldic League: An alliance of Protestant princes and cities in the Holy Roman Empire, formed to defend their religious and political interests. Its military defeat preceded the decree’s attempt to restore Catholic practice.
Adiaphora: Practices considered neither commanded nor forbidden by scripture and therefore open to Christian discretion. The Interim treated disputed ceremonies as practices Protestants could temporarily accept.

Princes' revolt: A 1552 uprising of German princes against Charles V that forced the emperor to negotiate. The revolt ended the emperor’s effort to impose the Interim by imperial authority.
Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg ruler who governed the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 to 1556. Charles V ordered the Interim as a provisional settlement after his victory.
Augsburg Confession: The principal Lutheran confession of faith, presented to Emperor Charles V in 1530. The Interim’s accommodation of Protestant belief drew on debates surrounding this confession.
