August Revolution

The Việt Minh-led seizure of power across much of Vietnam in August 1945, following Japan’s surrender. It ended the Nguyễn dynasty’s rule and enabled Hồ Chí Minh to proclaim the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Surrender of Japan: Japan’s acceptance of Allied surrender terms on 15 August 1945, ending the Second World War in Asia. The sudden power vacuum after Japan’s surrender opened the opportunity for Việt Minh action.
French Indochina: The French colonial federation encompassing Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from the late nineteenth century to 1954. French colonial rule shaped the nationalist movement that later seized power.

Trường Chinh: A Vietnamese communist leader who served as general secretary of the Indochinese Communist Party during the revolution. He helped direct the party strategy behind the August uprising.
Vietnamese Declaration of Independence: Hồ Chí Minh’s 1945 declaration establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and asserting national independence. It publicly expressed the statehood claim created by the August takeover.
