Augustin-Jean Fresnel

Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788–1827) was a French physicist whose mathematical and experimental work established wave optics and explained reflection, refraction, diffraction, and polarization.

Wave optics: The branch of optics that explains light through wave phenomena such as interference, diffraction, and polarization. Fresnel’s experiments and mathematics made wave optics a comprehensive alternative to corpuscular accounts of light.
Interference: The redistribution of wave amplitude when waves overlap, producing reinforcement and cancellation. Fresnel used interference to explain optical fringes and support the wave theory of light.
Thomas Young: An English polymath whose experiments with light interference revived the wave theory of light. Young’s interference evidence helped establish the experimental foundation Fresnel extended mathematically.
Dominique-François-Jean Arago: A French physicist, astronomer, and political figure who investigated optics and supported wave theories of light. Arago collaborated with Fresnel on experiments involving polarized light.
Transverse wave: A wave whose oscillations are perpendicular to its direction of propagation. Fresnel’s account of polarization required light waves to oscillate transversely.
Fresnel lens: A thin lens made of concentric stepped sections that preserve much of a conventional lens’s focusing power with less material. Fresnel designed this compact lens form for lighthouse illumination.
Diffraction: The spreading and redistribution of waves as they pass openings or encounter obstacles. Fresnel developed mathematical methods for predicting diffraction patterns.
Corpuscular theory of light: A theory that treats light as a stream of particles rather than a propagating wave. Fresnel’s wave account challenged the dominant particle-based explanation of optical phenomena.
Siméon Denis Poisson: A French mathematician who derived a counterintuitive prediction from Fresnel’s diffraction theory. Poisson identified the bright spot implied by Fresnel’s equations, prompting its experimental verification.
Huygens' principle: A construction in which every point on a wavefront emits secondary wavelets whose envelope forms a later wavefront. Fresnel extended this earlier propagation rule by accounting for interference among wavelets.
