Augustus II the Strong

Augustus II the Strong was Elector of Saxony and king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania. He ruled Saxony as Frederick Augustus I and is remembered for his court’s Baroque splendor and struggles to secure hereditary rule in Poland.

Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A federated state of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that existed from 1569 to 1795. Augustus’s Polish crown rested on this elective commonwealth, whose nobles limited royal power.
House of Wettin: A German dynasty that ruled Saxony and supplied monarchs to Poland and Lithuania. Augustus’s Saxon inheritance came from this dynasty, which later reunited the Polish and Saxon crowns.
Stanisław Leszczyński: A Polish noble elected king in 1704 and 1733, whose reigns were contested by rival claimants. Sweden’s support for Leszczyński created the rival kingship that drove Augustus from Poland.

Free election: The procedure by which nobles of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth elected the monarch. Augustus gained Poland’s throne through an election rather than automatic inheritance.
John George III, Elector of Saxony: The Wettin elector of Saxony from 1680 to 1691 and father of Augustus II. His death in 1691 made Augustus heir to the Saxon electorate.
Charles XII of Sweden: King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718 and a leading commander in the Great Northern War. His invasion of Poland forced Augustus to confront a Swedish-backed rival monarch.
Dresden Frauenkirche: A Baroque Lutheran church in Dresden, built between 1726 and 1743 and reconstructed after its destruction in 1945. Its construction during Augustus’s reign reflects Dresden’s architectural expansion, though he did not commission it.
Battle of Poltava: A 1709 battle in which Peter the Great’s Russian army defeated Charles XII’s Swedish forces in Ukraine. The Swedish defeat helped Augustus return to the Polish throne.
