Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an American sculptor and medalist whose public monuments and coin designs helped shape the Beaux-Arts style in the United States.

General William Tecumseh Sherman Monument: A bronze equestrian monument in New York City depicting William Tecumseh Sherman led by Winged Victory. This major public commission combines Saint-Gaudens’s portraiture with an allegorical figure.
High relief: A sculptural technique in which figures project strongly from their background. Saint-Gaudens used unusually deep relief for his double eagle design.
