Austen Chamberlain

A British Conservative statesman who served as foreign secretary from 1924 to 1929 and shared the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Locarno Treaties.

Neville Chamberlain: A British Conservative politician who served as prime minister from 1937 to 1940. Austen’s younger half-brother later led Britain through the early years of the Second World War.
Locarno Treaties: A 1925 agreement system in which European states guaranteed western borders and arranged arbitration and security commitments. Chamberlain helped negotiate these treaties as Britain’s foreign secretary.

Gustav Stresemann: A German statesman who served as foreign minister during the Weimar Republic and shared the 1926 Nobel Peace Prize. Chamberlain negotiated with Stresemann at Locarno to ease Franco-German tensions.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers. Locarno sought a less coercive path to European security than the postwar settlement alone had provided.
