Australian Football League

Australia’s premier professional Australian rules football competition, organized by the governing body of the same name. It is contested by clubs from several Australian states.

AFL season: The annual cycle of Australian Football League home-and-away matches and finals. Its fixtures and finals structure determine how the league’s premier club is crowned.
Victorian Football League: The Victorian Australian rules football competition established in 1897, which became the Australian Football League. The modern league began as this competition before taking its national name.
AFL clubs: The professional teams that compete in the Australian Football League. The clubs are the league’s competitors and the main focus of its season.
Australian rules football: A football code originating in Australia, played with an oval ball on a large oval field. The league is the leading professional competition for this sport, not the sport itself.

AFL draft: The annual player-selection process through which Australian Football League clubs recruit eligible players. Draft rules distribute young talent among clubs and shape their long-term lists.
South Melbourne Football Club: An Australian rules football club founded in 1874 that relocated to Sydney in 1982 and became the Sydney Swans. The club’s relocation was an early landmark in the league’s expansion beyond Victoria.
