Australian republicanism

Australian republicanism is the movement to replace Australia's constitutional monarchy with a republic. It includes competing proposals for selecting an Australian head of state and changing the Constitution.

1999 Australian republic referendum: A national referendum in 1999 asked voters whether Australia should become a republic with a president chosen by Parliament. It tested one proposed route to a republic and was defeated by a majority of voters.
