Austrasia

Austrasia was the eastern kingdom of the Merovingian Franks, centered on the Meuse and Rhine regions. It existed from the sixth to eighth centuries and often competed with Neustria.

Clovis I: Clovis I was a Frankish king who united much of Gaul and founded the Merovingian dynasty’s power. His death in 511 divided the Frankish realm among his sons, setting the pattern for Austrasia’s emergence.
Brunhilda: Brunhilda was a Visigothic princess and Frankish queen who wielded power in Austrasia and Burgundy. Her regency and rivalry with Fredegund influenced Austrasian politics for decades.
Merovingian kingdom: A Merovingian kingdom was a territorial realm ruled by a member of the Frankish royal dynasty. Austrasia was one such realm, whose boundaries and unity shifted with royal inheritance.
Neustria: Neustria was the western Frankish kingdom centered on the regions between the Seine and Loire. Its competition with Austrasia shaped Merovingian wars and royal succession.
Carolingian dynasty: The Carolingian dynasty was a Frankish ruling family that replaced the Merovingians in 751. Its political ascendancy grew from Austrasian offices and aristocratic networks.
Treaty of Andelot: The Treaty of Andelot was a 587 agreement between the Frankish kingdoms of Burgundy and Austrasia. It settled succession and alliance disputes involving Austrasian King Childebert II.
Fredegund: Fredegund was a queen of Neustria and a political rival of Brunhilda. Her conflict with Brunhilda drew Austrasia into prolonged wars with Neustria.
Mayor of the palace: The mayor of the palace was a senior official who managed the royal household and increasingly exercised political authority in Frankish kingdoms. Austrasian mayors of the palace became powerful enough to govern in the kings’ names.
Burgundy: Burgundy was a Frankish kingdom in the Rhône and Saône regions during the Merovingian period. It was Austrasia’s southern neighbor and at times shared rulers or alliances with it.
Battle of Tertry: The Battle of Tertry was a 687 victory by Austrasian forces over Neustria. It secured Austrasian mayor Pippin II’s dominance over the Frankish kingdoms.
