Austria-Hungary was a Central European dual monarchy from 1867 to 1918, joining the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary under one monarch and shared institutions.

Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867: The agreement that established Austria-Hungary by dividing authority between the Austrian and Hungarian halves. It created the dual monarchy’s constitutional framework and defined which affairs the halves shared.
Revolutions of 1848: A wave of political uprisings across Europe demanding constitutional government and, in many regions, national self-rule. Revolutionary demands exposed the Habsburg Empire’s national and constitutional tensions.
