Austrian Netherlands

The Habsburg-ruled southern Netherlands from 1714 to 1797, including the port of Ostend. Its provinces retained distinct institutions while coming under Austrian dynastic rule.

Treaty of Rastatt: A 1714 treaty between France and the Holy Roman Empire that ended their conflict in the War of the Spanish Succession. It transferred the Spanish Netherlands to Austria as part of the postwar settlement.
Barrier Treaty: A series of treaties allowing Dutch garrisons in fortresses in the southern Netherlands to defend against France. It limited Austrian control of the region's defenses after 1715.
