Autism rights movement

A movement advocating autistic people’s rights, acceptance, and participation in decisions affecting them. It challenges approaches that treat autism solely as a disorder to eliminate or cure.

Autistic Self Advocacy Network: A nonprofit organization founded in 2006 to advance autistic people’s rights and civic participation. Its founding made the principle of autistic people speaking for themselves an institutional practice.
Autistic identity: A person’s understanding of autism as part of their identity and lived experience. Identity language anchors claims that autistic lives deserve respect without cure as a prerequisite.
Disability rights: Legal and social claims to equal treatment, accessibility, and participation for disabled people. Autism rights advocacy is part of a wider movement for disability equality.
Applied behavior analysis: A behavior-based intervention approach that uses learning principles to change behavior. Some autistic advocates criticize its history and goals, especially when compliance outweighs autonomy.
Jim Sinclair: An autistic activist whose 1993 essay “Don’t Mourn for Us” challenged parents’ grief-centered responses to autism. Sinclair’s essay gave an influential early statement of autistic identity and acceptance.
Social model of disability: An account of disability that locates disadvantage in social barriers rather than individual impairment alone. It helps explain the movement’s focus on accessibility and exclusion, not only clinical traits.
Supported decision-making: An approach that helps people make their own decisions with chosen assistance instead of substituting another person’s judgment. It offers an alternative to denying autistic people agency in decisions about their lives.
Autism cure debate: Public and ethical disagreement over whether autism should be prevented, treated, or accepted as human variation. The movement often rejects cure-centered priorities while distinguishing acceptance from denying support needs.
Neurodiversity: The view that neurological differences are natural forms of human variation. This framework supplied a broader language for opposing deficit-only accounts of autism.
Double empathy problem: The theory that communication difficulties between autistic and non-autistic people arise from mutual differences in understanding. It challenges accounts that place social misunderstanding entirely on autistic people.
