Auxiliary hypothesis

An auxiliary hypothesis is an additional assumption used with a theory to derive predictions or interpret tests. It connects a theory to observable evidence or specifies conditions under which the theory applies.

Duhem–Quine thesis: The thesis that hypotheses are tested in bundles with background assumptions, rather than in isolation. It explains why a failed prediction does not identify which assumption in a test was wrong.
Scientific theory: A structured account that explains phenomena and supports systematic predictions. Auxiliary hypotheses work alongside theories rather than replacing their central explanatory claims.
Core hypothesis: The principal claim of a research proposal or theory, distinguished from supporting assumptions. It is the central claim tested together with auxiliary hypotheses.
Neptune: The eighth planet from the Sun, discovered after its position was predicted from irregularities in Uranus's orbit. Its predicted position tested Newtonian gravitation together with assumptions about the planets' masses and orbits.
Initial condition: A specification of a system's state at the start of a model or prediction. Initial conditions let a theory generate particular predictions from general laws.
Scientific hypothesis: A proposed claim about the world that can be investigated through evidence. Auxiliary hypotheses are one role that hypotheses can play within scientific testing.
Ad hoc hypothesis: An added claim introduced to protect a theory from contrary evidence, often without independent testability. Auxiliary hypotheses can support legitimate tests, while ad hoc additions merely shield a theory.
Uranus's orbit: The path of Uranus around the Sun, whose observed irregularities prompted a prediction of another planet. The discrepancy challenged a prediction only when observations and known planetary data were also assumed reliable.
Measurement theory: The study of how observations and measurements represent properties of the world. Measurement assumptions connect theoretical quantities to recorded observations.
Theoretical term: A term whose meaning is defined within a scientific theory rather than by direct observation alone. Auxiliary assumptions often specify how theoretical terms relate to measurable quantities.
