Avalokiteśvara

Avalokiteśvara is a bodhisattva embodying compassion in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Revered across Asia in diverse forms, the figure is known as Guanyin in China and Chenrezig in Tibet.

Guanyin: Guanyin is the Chinese bodhisattva of compassion, developed from Avalokiteśvara and widely venerated in East Asia. Chinese devotion reshaped Avalokiteśvara into a major figure of compassionate aid.
Mahāyāna: Mahāyāna is a major Buddhist tradition emphasizing the bodhisattva path and universal awakening. Avalokiteśvara’s role and scriptures belong to this broad Buddhist tradition.
Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra: The Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra is a Mahāyāna text centered on Avalokiteśvara and the mantra oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ. This scripture helped establish Avalokiteśvara’s expansive cosmic stature.
Om mani padme hum: Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ is a six-syllable Buddhist mantra closely associated with Avalokiteśvara. Tibetan Buddhists recite this mantra as an invocation of the bodhisattva’s compassion.
Amitābha: Amitābha is a celestial Buddha associated with infinite light and the Pure Land of Sukhāvatī. Avalokiteśvara is often depicted as Amitābha’s attendant, not as the Buddha himself.
Chenrezig: Chenrezig is the Tibetan form of Avalokiteśvara, regarded as the embodiment of compassion. Tibetan Buddhist traditions identify this bodhisattva with Chenrezig.
Bodhicitta: Bodhicitta is the aspiration to attain awakening for the benefit of all beings. This aspiration underlies the bodhisattva ideal embodied by Avalokiteśvara.
Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra: The Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtras describe Amitābha Buddha’s Pure Land and the path to rebirth there. They present Avalokiteśvara as a principal attendant of Amitābha.
Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī: The Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī is a Buddhist incantation associated with Avalokiteśvara and widely recited in East Asia. Its recitation makes Avalokiteśvara’s protection and aid part of daily devotional practice.
Maṇjuśrī: Maṇjuśrī is a bodhisattva who embodies transcendent wisdom in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Maṇjuśrī’s defining wisdom complements Avalokiteśvara’s defining compassion.
