Aviation fuel

Aviation fuel powers aircraft engines, principally aviation gasoline for piston engines and kerosene-based fuels for turbine engines. Its specifications address performance, safety, and operation across demanding flight conditions.

Aviation gasoline: A high-octane gasoline formulated for spark-ignition piston aircraft engines. It powers piston aircraft rather than turbine aircraft.
Combustion: A chemical reaction in which a fuel reacts with an oxidizer, releasing heat and often light. Aircraft engines extract useful power from fuel combustion.
Jet A: A kerosene-type turbine fuel commonly used in the United States and some other regions. It is a widely used civil aviation fuel grade.
Automotive gasoline: A gasoline blend formulated for road vehicles rather than aviation piston-engine requirements. Its specifications and additives can make it unsuitable for aircraft engines.
Jet fuel: Kerosene-based fuel used by gas-turbine aircraft engines. It is the principal fuel family for turbine-powered aircraft.
Fuel injection: A system that meters and delivers fuel into an engine's intake or combustion chamber. It controls how aircraft engines receive fuel for combustion.
Jet A-1: A kerosene-type turbine fuel specified for international use, with a lower freezing point than Jet A. Its cold-temperature specification suits international operations.
Diesel fuel: A middle-distillate fuel designed primarily for compression-ignition engines. It resembles kerosene chemically but is not interchangeable with certified jet fuel.
Aircraft piston engine: A reciprocating engine that converts combustion pressure into shaft power for an aircraft propeller. Its spark-ignition design requires aviation gasoline or another approved piston-engine fuel.
Fuel icing: The formation of ice crystals from dissolved water in fuel as it cools. Ice crystals can obstruct filters and threaten fuel flow at altitude.
