Aviation

Aviation is the design, development, operation, and use of aircraft, together with the systems and activities that support flight and air travel.

Aerodynamics: The study of how air flows around objects and the forces that flow produces. Lift and drag arise from airflow around wings and other aircraft surfaces.
Aircraft: A vehicle designed to fly through the atmosphere by generating lift or buoyancy. Aircraft are the machines at the center of aviation's many activities.
Commercial aviation: The operation of aircraft to transport passengers or cargo for payment. It accounts for scheduled airline and much other paid air transport.
Wright brothers: American inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright, whose 1903 powered airplane achieved controlled, sustained flight. Their aircraft combined powered flight with effective three-axis control.
Aviation safety: The practices, technologies, and rules intended to prevent aircraft accidents and reduce their consequences. Safety systems emerged to manage the risks of increasingly complex flight.
Aircraft propulsion: The production of thrust to move an aircraft through the air. Propulsion systems provide the force that overcomes drag and enables flight.
Fixed-wing aircraft: An aircraft whose wings remain stationary and generate lift as it moves through the air. Airliners and most conventional airplanes belong to this broad aircraft type.
General aviation: Civil aviation other than scheduled airline services and certain commercial air transport. It includes private flying, flight training, aerial work, and many smaller operators.
Otto Lilienthal: German aviation pioneer whose systematic glider flights in the 1890s advanced practical understanding of flight. His experiments supplied data and inspiration to later airplane designers.
Aircraft noise pollution: Unwanted sound produced by aircraft, especially around airports and flight paths. Noise affects communities near airports and influences operating restrictions.
