Avicennism

Avicennism is the philosophical tradition derived from Avicenna’s writings, especially his metaphysics, psychology, and account of knowledge. Later thinkers adapted and debated its doctrines across Islamic and Latin intellectual traditions.

Avicenna: Avicenna was a Persian philosopher and physician whose works shaped philosophy and medicine across Islamic and Latin traditions. His writings provide the starting point for the tradition named after him.
Emanationism: The view that lower levels of reality proceed from a first principle through a structured chain of causation. Avicenna uses emanation to explain how the Necessary Existent grounds the cosmic order.
Al-Ghazali: A theologian and philosopher who criticized major claims of Islamic philosophers, including Avicenna. His critique in The Incoherence of the Philosophers became a defining challenge to Avicennian metaphysics.
Islamic philosophy: Philosophical inquiry developed in Islamic societies through engagement with Greek, Persian, and religious intellectual traditions. Avicennism became one of its most influential and enduring traditions.
Essence and existence: Essence is what a thing is; existence is that it is. Avicenna’s distinction between them grounds his account of contingent beings and necessary existence.
Active intellect: An intellect that actualizes human understanding by making intelligible forms available to the human mind. It explains how human potential knowledge becomes actual in Avicenna’s psychology.
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi: A theologian and philosopher who critically examined Avicenna’s doctrines and developed arguments of his own. His commentaries and objections helped transmit Avicennian philosophy while revising it.
Latin translations of Avicenna: Medieval translations that made Avicenna’s philosophical and medical works available to Latin readers. They carried Avicennian doctrines into European universities and scholastic debates.
Necessary existent: A being whose existence is necessary rather than dependent on another cause. Avicenna identifies the Necessary Existent with God and makes it the basis of his metaphysics.
Al-Farabi: A philosopher whose works shaped Islamic logic and metaphysics before Avicenna. Avicenna inherited and revised al-Farabi’s account of intellect and emanation.
