Avionics

Avionics are the electronic systems used in aircraft and spacecraft for communication, navigation, flight control, and monitoring.

Flight computer: A computer that processes aircraft data and supports or performs flight-control and management tasks. It processes sensor inputs and commands outputs across many avionics systems.
Fly-by-wire: A flight-control system that transmits pilot commands electronically to actuators. It replaces direct mechanical control linkages with electronic command paths.
Glass cockpit: A cockpit whose primary flight instruments are electronic displays rather than separate mechanical gauges. It presents flight and navigation information through configurable screens.
Avionics software certification: The process of demonstrating that airborne software meets applicable safety and airworthiness requirements. It constrains how avionics software is developed, tested, and changed.
Inertial navigation system: A navigation system that estimates position and motion from accelerometers and gyroscopes. It provides position and attitude estimates without relying on external signals.
Autopilot: A system that automatically controls an aircraft's flight path or attitude using sensor feedback. It uses avionics to maintain selected heading, altitude, or route.
Traffic Collision Avoidance System: An aircraft system that detects nearby transponder-equipped traffic and advises pilots about collision threats. It uses airborne surveillance data to support collision avoidance.
DO-178C: An industry standard providing guidance for the software aspects of airborne systems and equipment certification. It sets assurance practices for software used in certified aircraft systems.
Global Navigation Satellite System: A satellite-based system that provides positioning, navigation, and timing services. Aircraft avionics use satellite signals to determine position and support navigation.
Aircraft health monitoring: The collection and analysis of aircraft system data to detect faults and assess condition. Monitoring avionics identify abnormal readings and help crews respond to failures.
