Awami League

The Awami League is a major Bangladeshi political party founded in 1949. It led the movement that culminated in Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971.

East Bengal: The eastern region of Bengal that became East Pakistan after the 1947 partition of British India. The party emerged from East Bengal’s political grievances and regional identity.
Six-Point Movement: A 1966 autonomy program calling for a federal Pakistan with extensive powers for its constituent regions. The Awami League used these demands to organize East Pakistan’s autonomy movement.
Bangladesh: A South Asian country that became independent from Pakistan in 1971. The Awami League’s independence movement brought the country into existence.
Tajuddin Ahmad: A Bangladeshi politician who served as prime minister of the provisional government during the 1971 Liberation War. As a senior Awami League leader, he organized the wartime government in Mujib’s absence.
Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. Partition placed East Bengal within Pakistan, creating the political setting for the party’s founding.

Four National Principles of Bangladesh: The constitutional principles of nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism adopted by Bangladesh in 1972. They expressed the founding political vision of the Awami League-led state.
Syed Nazrul Islam: A Bangladeshi politician who served as acting president of the provisional government during the Liberation War. He led the party’s provisional government while Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was imprisoned in Pakistan.
Language Movement: A movement in East Bengal opposing the imposition of Urdu as Pakistan’s sole state language. The party supported Bengali’s recognition, making language rights an early mobilizing issue.
Non-cooperation movement in East Pakistan: A mass campaign of civil disobedience in East Pakistan in March 1971, led by the Awami League. The party’s refusal to cooperate with central rule established de facto Bengali authority before war.
