Axis of Resistance

The Axis of Resistance is a loose political and military network led by Iran, linking states and armed groups that oppose Israel and U.S. influence in the Middle East.

Iran: A Middle Eastern state whose government has supported allied political and armed groups across the region. Iran provides the network’s central leadership, funding, training, and strategic direction.
Quds Force: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps branch responsible for foreign operations and relationships with allied groups. It coordinates training, weapons, financing, and strategy across the network.
Iranian Revolution: The 1978–1979 uprising that overthrew Iran’s monarchy and established the Islamic Republic. The new Iranian government made exporting its revolutionary model a core foreign-policy aim.
Israel–Hezbollah conflict: A recurring armed confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah, including major wars and cross-border exchanges. This front demonstrates how a network member can directly challenge Israel.
Hezbollah: A Lebanese Shia Islamist movement with a political party and a heavily armed military wing. Hezbollah is one of Iran’s closest and most capable allied organizations.
Proxy warfare: A strategy in which a state supports other actors to pursue conflict while limiting direct involvement. Iran uses allied groups to exert pressure while avoiding many costs of direct war.
Iran–Iraq War: The 1980–1988 war between Iran and Iraq, marked by prolonged trench warfare and heavy casualties. The war intensified Iran’s search for regional partners and strategic depth.
Syrian civil war: A conflict that began in 2011 as an uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s government and became an internationalized war. Iran and allied forces intervened to preserve Assad’s government and secure a vital regional corridor.
Hamas: A Palestinian Islamist movement that governs Gaza and has an armed wing. Hamas has received Iranian support despite differences in religious tradition and periods of strained ties.
Missile diplomacy: The use of missile capabilities and their threatened or demonstrated deployment to influence political outcomes. Missile arsenals give several aligned groups tools for deterrence and coercion.
