Azad Kashmir

Azad Kashmir, officially Azad Jammu and Kashmir, is a self-governing territory administered by Pakistan in the western part of the disputed Kashmir region. Its government operates under Pakistan’s constitutional framework, while Pakistan retains control over key matters including defense and foreign affairs.

Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan, accompanied by mass migration and violence. The partition left the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir’s accession unresolved.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir Interim Constitution Act 1974: The principal constitutional statute establishing the institutions and powers of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s government. It defines the territory’s governmental structure and the limits of its autonomy.
Gilgit-Baltistan: A region administered by Pakistan in the northern part of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the other major Pakistan-administered territory in the disputed region.
