Azimuth

Azimuth is the horizontal angle from a reference direction, usually north, to the direction of an object or course. It is commonly measured clockwise from 0° to 360°.

Bearing (navigation): A horizontal direction expressed as an angle from a specified reference direction. Like azimuth, a bearing encodes direction as a horizontal angle; conventions determine how each is reported.
Celestial coordinate system: A framework for specifying the apparent positions of objects on the celestial sphere. Horizontal sky coordinates use azimuth to locate an object around the observer's horizon.
Magnetic north: The direction toward Earth's magnetic north pole as indicated by a magnetic compass. Azimuth referenced to magnetic north can differ from one referenced to true north.
Horizontal plane: A plane perpendicular to the local vertical direction at a given location. Azimuth is measured within this plane, rather than along a vertical arc.
Compass rose: A diagram showing cardinal and intermediate directions around a central point. Its north-centered directions provide a familiar reference for expressing azimuth.
Altitude (astronomy): The angular height of a celestial object above the observer's horizon. Altitude pairs with azimuth to specify a direction in the local sky.
Grid north: The north direction of the vertical grid lines on a map projection. Map-based azimuth may use grid north rather than geographic north.
Angle: A measure of rotation between two rays or directions sharing a vertex. Azimuth applies the general idea of an angle to a reference direction and a target.
Cardinal direction: One of the principal compass directions: north, east, south, or west. These named directions divide the circle that azimuth measures continuously.
Surveying: The measurement and mapping of positions, distances, and boundaries on or near Earth's surface. Surveyors use azimuths to record and set out directions between points.
