Azimuthal equidistant projection

A map projection that preserves great-circle distances and initial directions from one chosen center to every other mapped point. Its scale and shapes distort away from that center.

Azimuthal projection: A map projection that represents the globe on a plane centered on a chosen point. The azimuthal equidistant projection is one member of this projection family.
Radio propagation map: A map showing signal coverage or propagation distances from one or more transmitters. Distances from a transmitter can be read directly when it is placed at the projection’s center.
Mercator projection: A cylindrical map projection that preserves local angles and represents rhumb lines as straight lines. Unlike this projection, Mercator preserves local angles rather than distances from a center.
Latitude: The angular position of a point north or south of the equator. The central point is specified partly by its latitude.
Great-circle distance: The shortest surface distance between two points on a sphere, measured along a great-circle arc. This is the distance the projection preserves from its center.
Air route map: A map used to depict airline routes and their geographic relationships. A route network centered on an airport can show distances and bearings from that hub.
Gnomonic projection: A projection from the center of a sphere onto a tangent plane, in which great circles appear straight. It makes great-circle paths straight, but does not preserve their distances from the center.
Longitude: The angular position of a point east or west of a reference meridian. The central point is specified partly by its longitude.
Map scale: The relationship between distances on a map and corresponding distances on the represented surface. Scale is exact radially at the center but changes with distance and direction elsewhere.
United Nations emblem: The official emblem of the United Nations, depicting a world map surrounded by olive branches. Its world map uses an azimuthal equidistant projection centered on the North Pole.
